Gliobot: helping glioblastoma patients understand treatment options
Meet the Assistant
In 2018, Roberto Pugliese lost his son Emanuele to glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the same cancer that killed Sen. John McCain, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Joseph "Beau" Biden III, son of Joe Biden. In response, Roberto founded www.glioblastomamultiforme.it to spread information and share patient stories with other families battling glioblastoma multiforme.
Gliobot is a chatbot embedded in the website that answers questions about glioblastoma multiforme. Users can also ask Gliobot about specialized treatment centers in Italy, active clinical trials, and treatment suggestions thanks to integration with the clinical trials database. Because medical treatment became more difficult to receive amid the global Covid-19 pandemic, Gliobot also provides a self-assessment for Covid-19 symptoms. If the chatbot doesn't know the answer to the user's question, it falls back to Wikipedia and WolframAlpha.
Roberto continues to improve Gliobot, most recently adding an integration with the virtual trials database, providing users with a list of available treatments for glioblastoma multiforme and information about their efficacy. Next, Roberto plans to add a hand-off feature to transfer the conversation to a human operator.
